You are super excited about trying on tarot reading. You have always wanted to learn more about it and now you are at a place where you are ready. But you are not sure where to start. Ladies and gentlemen, this is normal. There are sooo many decks out there and sooo many people that can push you in different directions. While I would say that if you were given your first deck (a tradition that some still believe to this day is necessary when we begin tarot) it is easier because it was chosen for you, there are benefits to you finding one that you like on your own. Here are a simple few strategies that you can follow as you go out and about in search of your very first deck.
Finding a popular deck may be your best bet when it comes to first time learners. Rider Waite tarot is probably the most common and there is a lot of literature around card interpretations. Since this is your first stab at tarot, it is always good to have a multitude of resources. With this deck, this is surely the case. Although this wasn’t my first, I actually bought a deck just to say that I have used it before! My second suggestion is to see if you can find decks that you feel drawn to or that interests you. My first deck was a set of angel cards. Although one reason I chose these was because of my love for angels and my Christian background, the other reason I chose them was to get to know the angels better. I felt like they were right for me. There are so many out there. Some may prefer fairies over angels, while others may prefer animal imagery. It’s all in what you are most interested in and what calls to you. Other than purchasing a common tarot or one that you are drawn to, another strategy you can use in finding the first perfect deck is to explore the little guidebooks that come with most decks. If you are looking for precise information, you may want to choose one that has elaborate explanations of what the cards mean or you may even choose a deck with the meaning of the card right on it such as Tell Me Tarot. I would like you to think about what you are hoping to gain from reading tarot. Since every deck is different, each one pulls on a different vibration. Are you seeking peace and tranquility in your life? Are you seeking to connect with your guides or angels? Are you an earth druid and you want to build your connection with earth and nature? The last piece I want to suggest is that as you are seeking and reading about your new deck opportunities, it is important to also consider the quality of the deck you are looking at. Some are not made as well as others, and though the artwork may be breathtaking, if the cards can’t sustain a good fold then they may not be best for the long run. Quality does matter. Happy tarot hunting my friends and welcome to this fun and enchanting world! Please, share your favorite deck below so that others may benefit from you!! -Blessings!

I use the light seer deck. It is my favorite one. I have also used Shapeshifter. Thank you for sharing this! I agree that Rider Waite is perfect first time tarot.
